One day a tortoise, named Geoff Steady, went to the river for a drink of water. Every time he heard a strange noise, he would pull his head in his shell. He was scared that day. He was always scared. He got to the river and reached for the water.
“Help! Oh, please help!” someone screamed. Geoff got a fright and hid in his shell again. After a while he heard that it was a familiar voice. In the middle of the river he saw an island. His friend, the bunny Daisy Hoplite, was standing on the island, calling for help.
“How did you get there?” he cried.
“I was playing with my friends, when I accidently hopped into the river,” she shouted.
Geoff looked around and saw there was nobody nearby who could help.
“Stay there! I’m going to find help,” he called. He started walking up beside the river. After an hour he found a frog.
“Good day, Mr. Webley,” Geoff said.
“Indeed it is a good day. My tummy is filled with flies and I feel good. Oh and please call me Martin,” the frog said.
“Martin, I need your help. My friend, Daisy Hoplite, is stuck on an island in the middle of the river. I want to help her, but I am too scared. You are a strong swimmer. Can you swim to the island and get her?” Geoff asked.
“No,” said Martin.
“Why not?” Geoff cried.
“She’s too big for me to carry,” Martin said.
“But she is my friend,” Geoff said. He turned and watched the river. He saw something moving on the river. It was a boat filled with humans.
“Martin, I have an idea!” he called.
“What is the idea?” asked Martin.
“If I lie on my back, my shell has the same shape as that boat. Then I can drift on the water. You have those strong legs and webbed feet. If you can then push me, we can get to the island. Daisy can sit on my tummy and you can push us back,” Geoff explained.
“Great! Let’s do it,” Martin said.
“I can’t. I’m too scared,” Geoff replied.
“Geoff, Daisy is our friend. We must help her. You have a good idea. It will work. Let’s just do it,” Martin said.
“I can’t,” Geoff cried.
“Geoff, you can be a hero today,” Martin said. Geoff turned to look at the water again.
“Alright, let us save Daisy,” he said. He walked into the river.
“Brrr! It’s awfully cold,” said Geoff. He turned on his back in the water and pulled his legs and head into his shell. He was floating! He felt a small bump on his shell.
“What’s going on?” he cried. He was very scared.
“It’s me, Martin! I’m pushing you to the island,” Martin called. A few minutes later Geoff stuck his head out of the shell. They were close to the island. He could see Daisy standing on the edge. She was looking very happy to see Geoff. They reached the island.
“Get on my tummy. Martin will push us to the bank,” Geoff told Daisy. Daisy hopped onto Geoff’s tummy. Martin started pushing them back to the river’s bank. They got to the bank and Daisy hopped off.
“Thank you! You both are heroes!” she cried joyfully.
“No, Geoff is the hero. It was his plan to save you, and he did it even while he was scared,” Martin said.
“Geoff, thank you. I am very happy to have you as a friend,” said Daisy and she hugged Geoff.
