Words spoken can never be erased. Even if we repent, the initial cut is so deep that it seldomly heals properly.
Some people’s tongues are like blades, in one phrase, they can shatter all that is important to you...
Laura, Melanie and I were sitting in a coffee shop the other day, discussing the people passing by. Horrified, I looked at this obese, badly dressed woman walking past. She had on very outdated purple trousers and a disgusting orange jumper. Naturally, I made my views clear and Melanie wholeheartedly agreed.
We both looked at Laura to add to this list of unfashionable dress code, but she softly replied that she knew this woman. I suddenly cringed to the size of the breadcrumb lying on my plate and Laura told us that she was the wife of the plutocrat, Sir Henry Blake. We gaped. Blake was the apparent, very wealthy guy who stole 50 million rand from his company. This woman now has to live from charity.
People forget that they are only tiny specks in the universe and these specks can become so pompous and judgmental. Everyone of us, like I, have put on the cloak of self-importance and the sword of a tongue.
Since when can you judge a book by its cover?
“There is so much good in the worst in us,
And so much bad in the best of us,
That it hardly concerns any of us
To talk about the rest of us.”
Turn the pages and remember when you were the receiver of a tongue-lashing.
How lucky we are that our merciful Creator picks up these shattered pieces. He makes a collage of our lives and creates a pretty picture. A picture where His light can shine through our windows to reveal the beautiful colours within. Every new piece, a new design and colour in the mosaic window of our lives.
May the day that you start to see your own picture, be the beginning of a life where you can see other people’s windows through the eyes of God.
