They looked me in the eye
Hateful glint shimmering wild
Fear goaded, vengeance unloaded
Clammy features twisted, enraged
Thumping chest my breath demanding
Enormous pain consistently pounding
Crimson sputter escapes my mouth
Why did I ever come from the South?
Deafening voices not from within
Rifle butt battering my dirty skin
Blazing sun my lips are cracked
Throat is parched, I lie on my back
Wonderful silence, premature darkness
Pictures perceived, thoughts countless
My muscles relax and then I shudder
This my last breath, broken and vulgar
Sadness trickles down my cheek
All is lost, all is meek
Tomorrow I will never see
