Looking into the mirror
I saw myself with a flycatcher’s tongue*
flapping from my mouth
at intervals of five seconds
I sighed and feared and wept
"Ah that the butterfly’s gilded wing
forever flutters
in boughs of trees eternally green
Why should the living ever weep
why should the living die?" **
