Bodies were flung
out of our moving vehicles
as raggedy dolls
while calling out for their mothers
The burning corpses in the road
strangely appeased the hordes
who watched in fascination
as the fire stretched and released tendons
to create macabre movement
of limbs in death
the smell
sticks for a while to your clothes
and then longer to your memory
The war ends only for the dead.
