Today my mind is a pocketbook of snapshots
and I find myself paging back compulsively.
Your mothers big round belly
expressing all our hopes and desires for you.
The 34 kilometer journey back to the farm
and you a tightly wrapped bundle
of dreams, our dreams,
even of this day.
A bowl of porridge for the dogs
and you feeding your face.
Six years old in Simons Town
asking your mom
“who am I”?
Your first day at school
then teaching the boys at home.
Your flat above the pub
in old London Town
growing catnip in a tray
on the window sill.
Memories contained in moments.
Such a strange anomaly
that moments can stretch to eternity.
But you Don, we could not see.
Yet here you stand
the bright side of her life
at the dawn of a new family.
My tears today combine the loss
of your childhood, forever etched,
with the happiness of seeing jour joy
in the sun and the sea of your brave new world.
