I bet this river knows
I bet it can testify to more of our lives
that we'd believe possible
I bet it remembers the day I crossed the bridge
that day when you said goodbye
leaving me in my sorrow
I bet it remembers my tears
that fell all the way down
into its slow moving body
on its way down to the ocean
It could probably tell all the secrets
of my love poems to you that I'd written
while lying under the big old tree
on the north bank
All the time watching, waiting
I bet the river enven knows
- but will never tell -
when you kissed me that very first day
I'm sure it smiled and sighed
while passing by and lapping our feet
I know it wants to ease my sadness
wants to comfort me now
while listening silently to my sorrow
I know the river will never judge
It understands
It embraces me in familiar acceptance
I bet it will still be here
long after we've left this life - this earth
flowing gently
singing our song
