The second you were born I covered you
in prayers...
Baby powder strewn in love
Soft cherubim bottom, releases the aroma of love
Innocent baby eyes follow my every move
The future seemed so far away
And the world was your oyster, back then
- Oh my child if only I knew!
The skin, once soft, now riddled with sores…
I thought you had infection in your blood
how did I miss you were taking drugs?
I did not see it coming; I did not read the signs
My child once pure and loving
A soul now filled with lies.
Dear child I saw the shackles
yet still I pled and prayed.
Then light fell on me and the scales came off
Oh how cruel it was - I entered the gates of hell.
Still I kept strong and prayed and prayed
but alas my daughter slipped further away.
Those circled eyes, the bony arms
Where have you gone, my little one?
Praying, always praying.
Then gradually as darkness took over
My yesterday-child,
A demon crept in and stole my faith
so long I've been hoping, so long I have prayed.
Dullness settles as my lips remain sealed
Prayers gather dust on the bookshelf of my soul
Now I can but wonder who died; you or I?
