He started running when he was sixteen
left home with only an extra pair of jeans
just jumped an empty train
and only stopped once to wash his face in the rain
He was a man at eighteen
rawhide tough and rattlesnake mean
with a soul as free as his dreams
He’s just a saint going up in smoke
never beg when he’s down on his knees
always grin and get back on his feet
but sometimes feel like crossing the street
to where life’s easy and neat
He saw the seedy side of life
in late night bars and harbour dives
almost got tied down to a wife
when he was going on for twenty-five
he left when the going was good
a rolling stone he couldn't grow roots
He’s just a saint going up in smoke
never beg when his down on his knees
just grin and get back on his feet
and sometimes feel like crossing the street
to where life’s easy and neat
Well he turned forty-four
and somehow life’s wine has gone sour
there’s gray in his hair and pain in his eyes
too many dreams turned to dust
and for him the trains run late
but he caught the last one and left that nowhere state
went back to the girl he left at twenty-five
finally ready for the easy life
He’s just a saint going up in smoke
never beg when he’s down on his knees
grin and get back to his feet
and finally crossed that lonely street
to where life’s easy and sweet
