Where foreign blue gum trees
feel unwanted
and historic shells
mixed with sea sand
was the soil for my mothers’ garden,
where the tarred streets are
called after far away towns
and the smell of freshly caught fish
wafted into the house with my father,
where the neighbours knew our name:
there was my first home.
And over there, right
on the other side,
you can reach the ocean
after crossing the wooden bridge
where the waves come licking
your bare feet through the openings.
Hemmed in by shrouds of pink flamingos,
the slippery lagoon soil glide under
the frothy clouds pushed there by
the benevolent wind:
there was my first home.
