“You haven’t written any for me” she said
holding the book on her lap on the bed
profoundly those words grab my throat tightly across the room
I couldn’t believe I hadn’t noticed that imminent gloom
So for days now I’ve been battling those words
like the constant tapdrip or relentless bird
I can’t believe I missed such an important clue
“cause you know my daughter is a beautiful girl
a stunner, a thinker, a joker with free-spirited will
who knows what she wants and will take with due force
even if she met with any unkind closed doors
She spars with her intellect and her quick-witted words
She’s a master bilingualist who can outpun even nerds
So how do I sum up my feelings for her
except the usual pride and love,
I’m not sure
One thing I know for a fact without doubt
is that there’s no-one like her anywhere about
From the moment I saw her the very first time
till this moment when the clocks sounds it chime
all the poems I’ve written singing anyone else’s praise
all lack poorly in this comparison daze
I hold her high above my shoulders to reach for her star
and I believe without doubt that she CAN reach that far!
So this poem’s for you my beautiful girl
May you always know my love and how it thrill
Be kind to yourself, for this be my prayer
that you’ll always know that for you I’ll be there
