The old man eased his body down;
his legs were tired and the bench would do fine.
The gnarled hands were huge and trembled a lot.
So it took quite a while before he lit his pipe.
His gaze was intense as he watched the crowds
the hustle and bustle as they scurried along,
all trapped in the race against father time.
No-one even saw him as he tried to say hi,
so he simply sat staring at the rushing around,
blank faces were frozen as they hurried along
no time for a moment to embrace the sun.
The steps that they walk, the things that they do,
It was all old hat and nothing was new.
Once he too was young and a man amongst men
But none of that helped in the here and now,
he'd used up his youth and they were doing it too.
Time is quite sly and sneaks up on you,
eventually the mirror portrays someone else,
With skin now all wrinkled and your body slowed down
for a while you're quite lost with all the free time.
Then you wonder just when life passed you by.
The wrinkled face smiles as he gives a soft sigh
For he knows it’s a fact
These bodies so lithe will one day
Sit down on a rugged old bench and stare at the crowds.
