It is late afternoon
The world is still
The earth is hot
There is no wind
thus the Boabab’s branches are silent
Smoke from a nearby hut curl lazily upwards
towards the blue of the sky
Two women preparing the evening meal
of a simple bread on a hot flat stone
rhythmic to the only song they know
A few birds sing in the Boabab’s dry twigs
feasting on the ripe fruit
A few subdued sentences by the two men
at the fire
Flea stricken dog lying by their feet
A mother hen calling her fluffy chicks
to a morsal of food of ants and other insects
Long horned cattle lying lazily in the shade
chewing a cud of dry grass
Goat’s bleating the only sound disturbing
the still of the late afternoon
Flaming red aloe a colorful spot
in the bleak landscape
In the far misty blue mountains
blending with the gold
of the dying African sun
