The Opifex name has been a respected and noble Fabricator name in house Cannith for almost as long as the house has existed. The family has almost always exclusively been artificers, with some exceptions like Gerog Opifex who’s aggressive nature and love for battle saw him live through the part of the last days of the last war as an elite covert operative. He disappeared along with many others during the destruction of Cyre and the end of the last war. Gustav was an exceptional researcher and artificer himself. He was key in assisting in the development of Eternal Wands and has experienced many battles in small tactical guerrilla units and in larger blast forces designed to wipe enemy legions out at speed. Gustav was also a member of the established and noble family who disappeared during the dark days of Cyre’s destruction.
No one is sure exactly what happened to many at the end of the last war, but Gustav was captured and taken away in slavery. A band of goblin slavers took advantage of many of the opportunities of pillage and kidnapping that came about during the obliteration of Cyre.
Gustav has spent his time since then crafting and practicing his skills, while acquiring some new ones for the sake of survival, for his new masters. He learned through his interaction with other slaves and befriended captors that they resided now, in the city of Darguun.
He changed in many aspects over years of enslavement. He became faithful, where he used to only believe in the science of magic. He learned of the true existence of deities and finally turned to the Wee Jas, the stern lady, when he held one of the thousands of eternal wands he created to his head. A Cleric of the the witch goddess who was enslaved alongside Gustav, whom he never saw before and after the incident, talked him out of taking his own life. With quivering wand against his temple, the cleric explained that the understanding of magic will grant control over his fate, personal power and much more. She then also exclaimed in anger that so many worked and died to develop magic and his talents to the point where he and his abilities are now, that he would be a fool to take his own life. He will have his turn to die. It will not be arbitrary and it will be in service of the knowledge hê possesses and those to whom he will pass. it down.
In frustration and anger at his foolishness Gustav threw the spells in the wand at the nearest wall. It crumbled in a tremendous crash, Gustav thought that he brought about the end of himself and his fellow-captured Cleric, but the Cleric was gone. The dust settled, the cave-like cell he was held in did not collapse, but a portion of the wall did, opening to reveal a tunnel running past his cell. Within minutes an elite unit from the city of Sharn appeared in the hole in the wall. They explained that they were sent to retrieve the knowledge of Eternal Wands. I told them that me and the other artificers who worked here have made thousands and those who refused were either charmed or commanded to do so with magic. The knowledge of Eternal Wands is no longer, and was not for quite some time by then, secret knowledge. Their use was there for the world to exploit, good or bad.
This encounter and the realization that magic grants immense power through its control of people, fate and the world led him to study the teaching of his witch goddess closely.
He returned with the elite unit to the city of Sharn, where he then settled. His home city of Cyre destroyed. He learned that house Cannith survived as it always has through the millenniums, and his family was still alive and respected. He returned to his home, much changed by the ordeals he faced, a changed man. He studied the use of magic and their application through wands even closer of the next short period in his life, until constant conflict between him and the other members of his family, where they are now established in Sharn, became too much. Gustav realized he is no longer compatible with their way of life and the idle study of magic serves no one, especially not himself.
