The social network is a film about the international phenomenon that is Facebook, the interactive website that helps people to stay connected and find long lost friends, the one and only. It is hard to believe that it is less than a decade ago that Facebook was created. Today, millions of people all over the world use Facebook. It is incredibly popular, especially amongst young people and the product has had a massive influence on culture.
The social network tells the story of how it all began.
For the above mentioned reason, and if you, like myself, really know very little about the development of Facebook, the social network will be an interesting watch. On top of that is the fact that the story is really gripping and the acting is very good. One has to say, the social network deserves all the praise that is heaped upon it.
But as so often happens, this film is a dynamic thing. It has a life of its own that lies outside the realm of reality. It is mixture of half-truths and whole lies, but hey, that is what Hollywood is all about, and that is exactly what people like me pay lots of currency each year to go and see, and if you go and see this one, you can expect nothing less that Hollywood at its best.
Who should see this film and who should avoid it? If you are a fan of Facebook, it would be a good idea to see it. It should be a great idea to do a few searches as well, see what has been said here and there about the film, but fans of Facebook should definitely see it. If you really want to know about the real history behind the creation of Facebook, it’ll be better to just read up on it and skip the film.
Well, this is one of those films I am glad I have seen, but I didn’t enjoy it. While watching it, I knew there is a story here, but it is so twisted Hollywood style that it is unconvincing. Thus, I can conclude that I am ambivalent. If it wasn’t based on real events, I would have loved this film. It would have scored big. But because it is based on real events it didn’t convince me. But because I enjoyed, as a unique and dynamic production, I cannot be too ambivalent with the rating. 6/10
