The Kings speech is (I suppose) a British film and as such, I was unable to recognise a single actor or actress. Not one. But despite being unfamiliar with the actors (recognising a familiar face in those Hollywood productions can be quite exciting), The Kings speech is one of the very best films that I have seen in a very, very, and I mean a really very long time.
The story is based on events in the royal British family many decades ago during the 20th century. The King has two sons. The younger son, who is second in line, is the main character in the film. The film explores his battle with his speaking disorder, and hence the name of the film.
Even though all historical films are by nature a recreation and not very reliable as a source of historical knowledge, The Kings speech never felt over or undercooked in any way. Instead it was a very convincing film. Very well researched. I can remember one scene where the First World war is referred to as ‘the great war’ (it was in the time before the Second world war and people spoke like that), and I was thinking at that time that everything is so well executed. Not even an anachronism there.
In some ways, The kings speech is a simple story. It is not about war. In fact, as happens so often because of the fact that I often walk into cinemas without having seen previews of the particular movie I am about to watch, to poster of The kings speech misled me. There was very little politics in the film, and the focus was much more on the personal obstacles that the main character has to overcome, in order to fulfil his role that he had to.
But I was amazed, and I wonder, why do these people not make more films? Or do I simply miss them always. It is so different from Hollywood. It is so convincing, so natural almost. Such a simple, yet powerful film, and I know it will be a while before I will be able to stop talking about this film with everybody who cares to listen. Maybe it is just me, but I have to say, I highly recommend this one. If historical dramas are for you, you should not even consider to not go and see this one. The kings speech is by a very long stretch the best film I have seen for some time now.
Even though there is this big focus on his personal life, and less on the historical events surrounding it, but maybe BECAUSE of this fact, The Kings speech is an absolute must see. Yes, it is a film about the British, and we do not always like them. The British can be very clued up with themselves. But The Kings speech is a film, not so much about history, but about the human spirit. It is also very refreshing in that it offers actors pretty much unknown to many people like myself, who are more familiar with American films, and it also has the added advantage of having a different feel to it than any Hollywood film would ever be able to have. And although I know I am biased and you may disagree, I have to say, go watch the damn thing or miss out. 9/10
