O.k., so Elise (Angelina Jolie) and Frank (Johnny Depp) meet each other on a train for the ‘first’ time in their lives. She is some sort of a double agent, which we find out later in the film. He is a ‘math teacher’, which he is obviously not, since I put that in inverted commas. The film goes on to show how Elise tries to trick both the police and a band of criminals into believing that Frank is her lover/boyfriend/loved one. And that is what this film is really about.
But it is not this that makes this a good watch. There were many joys to The tourist. Amongst these is the great acting of both Jolie and Depp. Angelina Jolie is her steaming self in this film, and playing opposite Johnny Depp, well, it makes for a steamy couple.
But there was more to this film that just good acting. Unfortunately, I have to admit, the story was not that great to me, and I had a feeling about what was going to happen and I was right. And since I am not the biggest Einstein on films, there must have been others that got sniff in the nose. I don’t wanna give it away and spoil it for everyone though, so better wait and see for yourself.
But what is the other great features of this film then that I mentioned, apart from the acting that is? Well, the scenery is great. It shows of beautiful scenes of Europe one does not often see in films. In fact the scenery is pretty damn awesome, with scenes in Italy and possibly France, (if the parts where they are in those parts of the world was not make believe, which I hope not, otherwise they fooled me).
And then there is the action, o my goodness. Some of the scenes really got me to the edge of my seat and provides one with heaps of entertainment. Of course these kinds of films are never really realistic, and the Tourist is no exception. But that’s Hollywood.
The film is relatively family friendly. I didn’t pick up loads of unnecessary swearing. In fact, in one of the rare moments in the film that Frank does swear, it was a very applicable swearword and caused the audience to laugh – which is good work. The Tourist is an entertaining film. Not the best film I ever saw, but not bad. 7/10
