So, I went to see Splice yesterday. I was happy to be able to avoid another overrated Hollywood action film. And while Splice might not be the best film I have ever ever seen, I enjoyed it very much and was not disappointed.
Splice is a typical thriller. It is a film loaded with dark characters. (It is also not American and for that simple reason a great turn on for me) The film follows a couple (man and a woman) who study genetics. They go on to produce a new creature in their lab. This creature is half animal and half human. It can breathe underwater for example. Also has wings. Can understand human language (though not speak it), and looks human in some ways.
While the creature was intended to be used as part of their experiments to make better medicine, the plan soon falls apart. Both scientists grow attached to the creature and develop emotional ties with it (her). And then, it all erupts in chaos.
Being a new specimen, the behaviour patterns of your kind is largely unknown to everybody else. This is the big surprise element in the film. When the thing has grown up, one day, it goes on to (and if you plan to go and see this film then stop reading now), it goes on to kill everybody! Can you believe it? A killing rampage! In a film! Amazing.
And then of course everyone dies and it is not nice and so on and so on.
The film relies on the subject of morality and genetic modification processes, and it succeeded in making me think about the subject again. The actors and effects were good. Again, have to admit, will not think back to this film a lot in times to come, but all in all, I enjoyed this film. I was expecti ng aliens when I saw the poster advertising the film, because it looked like an alien film, out of this world type of thing. Plus the advertisement said ‘not completely human’, or something like that.
