The film version of the book Spud by the author John van der Ruit has caught the attention of South Africa, much like the book has. And if you’ve read the book and plan to see the film, then rest assured that the film lives up to the expectation, as much as a film can do. Because films are really for those among us who do not like to read much. But I dare say that those who have read the book will possibly find the film much more enjoyable since they will already be acquainted with the characters.
Spud is a very simple story – that of a young boy who goes to secondary school for the first time. He struggles to fitt in with the rest of the schoolboys who laughs at the size of his penis. But gradually Spud is accepted by the rest of his peer group.
The film touches on a range of subjects. It is set in 1990, and the release of Nelson Mandela and all banned political parties. This leads to arguments between the schoolboys about what the future holds for South Africa. It also unleashes fear in Spud’s father, who are afraid of the Communist nature of the freedom fighters at that time. As in the book, Spud is confronted with girls and his own sexuality. Spud is not a great sportsman, but he scores the honour of playing the lead role in the school play, where he plays Oliver Twist.
Whereas the book is written in dairy form, with the result being always a reflection on events of a specific day, the film gives one more a feeling of being ‘in the moment’. For the rest, the film contains a lot of boy’s stuff, typical kattekwaad like for instance night swimming, turning farting into a social event and watching pornography. The film also touches on alcoholism with one of Spud’s teachers (his English teacher who also turns out to be his mentor) who turns to alcoholism, especially after his wife left him. Eventually he gives up on drinking and reunites with his wife.
The film is very popular in South Africa and it is a great family film. It’s was good to watch this film, but better to have read the books.
