I’ve had my eye on this artist from the first time I noticed her during her audition for Idols 2007. Already then, I realized how special her talent is and was quite prepared to follow her successful career.
It was however during my second live show of hers that my surprise reached an all-time high. During Varingfees 2010 this young woman took my breath away…
As always, I expected quite a virtuoso performance from her and was quite ready with my camera, when she announced her attempt at Queen’s ‘I need somebody to love’. I remember actually raising an eyebrow, saluting in my mind the great effort she had to have put into choosing such a big song. We have learned through the years that a short list of artists’ works are not to be trifled with. Amongst them were big names like Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, Elton John, ABBA and Queen.
I froze in motion as she steered her way into the song. Already my skin had been sensitized by the warm rounded excellent sound of her voice, but negotiating her seemingly even more mature voice through this song, sent shivers through my already goose-bumped spine. My camera still hung motionless midway as my hands had come to a standstill, almost eyelevel.
Andriette made small fry of this big song as she rode the waves of the melodic lines and intervals with command and conviction. Realising the enormity of what had just transpired in front of my eyes and was making my whole body tremble, I smiled. “Eat your heart out, Queen. I wish you could’ve been here…”
The songs after this, including Tina Turner’s ‘Rolling on the river’ was yet more snowball effect confirmation that Andriette Norman was now even more than before a force to be reckoned with and could very well hold her own in the big leagues.
I salute you, Andriette, and wish you all the best in your career. If, what you have achieved at your tender age is anything to go by, I can foresee you taking the world by storm…
