What could I possibly say about this ever-impressing young artist? My words escape me today, as I attempt to do justice to this artist and how she has touched my life.
It was only last year when I was approached by this, to me, unknown name on facebook, but were sure to learn how great her musical talent were to enrich my life. Shortly after our introduction, she pointed me to her Youtube links and I was quite stunned at what I found there. Totally in awe, I was sold straight away and subsequently also bought the ticket to attend her solo performance at Villa Pascal.
I found her shy demeanor quite refreshing, as I expected this majestic force to be complimented by a vivacious loud personality. On the contrary, I was greeted by a demure, modest and reserved lady with a beautiful mane of hair. This stunning woman proves to blush easily and is quite uneasy when a fuss is made over her.
But I wish her to relax in this, as the attention will increasingly brighten her path, as I do believe great things are on the horizon for this singer / songwriter. It’s inevitable, for her talent outweighs most of her peers, and soon she would not be able to be so inconspicuous as she was hoping to be. Watch this space..
It’s quite difficult to distinguish and choose between her virtuoso guitar talent and that of her singing, the two compliment and complete each other in this well-versed artist. She has a knack to make it all seem so effortless, as her hand glides unlaboriously over the neck of her guitar. Her fingers tease with ease the chords and make it seem as if it is merely an extension of the instrument. A match made in heaven. Ask her about her training as a guitarist, and the bashful answer is dismissed with an unpretentious “just paying attention and practice”. Girl, you must surely have great attentionspan and perseverance, your modesty is almost as staggering and mind blowing as your talent.
Her well versed repertoire spans from classical pieces right through to flamenco and tango, and of course, rock. I have yet to pick my favourite, as the list is long and the choice is difficult to make. She performs each of them with such style and grace, one tends to forget she’s accompanying herself on one guitar only.
Her voice, smooth as a matured red wine, engulfs the room when she starts to sing and the little hairs on your arms stand on end. Without much drama, her sound diffuses into your cells and you are compelled to listen intently. The lyrics of her own creations are masterfully matched with melodies that sweeps you off your feet, and within moments you are strumming your fingers to the beat.
Still, her pure heart is so evident through her rich matured voice, together with the shy, timid disposition delivering her God given entriguing performance. You find yourself smiling broadly and feeling proud to share this with her.
Why do I enjoy her music? Because her sound makes me feel alive. And her music is the product of an intellectual mind and it makes you think. Besides that, she makes it seem easy. While we with our classically trained ear stood and listened to her performance, the ‘metalheads’ in close proximity also joined and before long, they too were wiping the goosebumps from their arms… she touched their souls. After her performance, my partner and I looked at each other and asked: “Can you believe what you just witnessed?” Hilandi’s sound is lively, big, truthful, honest, versatile and intense. I foresee a great career in her future. Remember the name.
