I do not like Hollywood films. As a rule, I avoid them. But then I get these bouts where I would watch a few just to remind me why I do not like them. And, of course, sometimes they supprise you. The great thing about many Hollywood films is that Hollywood is such an oiled machine, that you can sometimes enjoy a film that you, well, that you do not realy enjoy. This is true of Grown Ups.
Grown Ups is a film about a group of men who grew up togheteher as kids. They share special memories of playing basketball and winning a trophy. They all have the same fond memories of their old coach who had a huge influence on their characters and who coached them to glory in 1978. Then, 30 years later, the coach passes away, and the boys reunite for the funeral. But their lives is not exactly what it could be. They did not live by the lessons that their coach had taught them so many years ago. And the time for reflection and rediscovering life has suddenly arrived.
We see a group of people who are disorientated. They lie to each other. They chase money. Their children are spoiled. Their relationships are in a mess. And in the end they emerge as a group of rejuvenated people. It is close to repentance. Their children learn to be ‘normal’ kids again. Instead of playing Playstation all the time, they start to get dirty. And so every individual in the party tries to get a grip on his or her life.
Well, what is the verdict? I already hinted well. But as mentioned, this film had it’s moments. It also featured gorgeous women, but that’s beside the point. The truth is that this film is corny. It pretends to be what it is not, namely a very philosophical film. The acting is not memorable. Although the film supposedly asks questions about society, it is not done in a very convincing way. This became especially clear to me in one scene where the one character is presented as a grown up woman with an obsession with celebrities and Hollywood stars. I thought what? Is Hollywood now turning against itself? Isn’t that exactly what they have been selling for a century? The life of being rich and famous? Grown Ups to me is just a feel good movie, and only just. But that is my opinion. 4/10.
