I often wonder why I should continue reading. I have read a number of books in my life, I suspect many more than some, but despite this, I do not consider myself very literate. Every person has limited time on earth – why should we use this time to read books I often wonder. Is it not better just to live one’s life? To go without books? To experience the world? Isn’t it a waste of time to read a book?
But then I realise time and again that language is power. So often we cannot get what we want in life, and we cannot get others to understand us, because of the simple fact that we do not know how to express ourselves. This is why books are important. There is never enough time to read all that one wants to read, but this should not discourage us from taking the time and putting in the effort. Every time we read, we empower ourselves, because we learn how to interpret and we observe how to express. And the better we are at these things, the more we have power in our lives.
Reading is not the alpha and the omega, but one should not neglect it. I also believe that it is less what we read and more important THAT we read. Yes, there are some things that I suppose is a total waste to read. Sometimes I am under the impression that it is perhaps better to ignore the media totally. But I suppose it is better to limit ones exposure to the media (especially the internet), and to not neglect reading books. Totally ignoring the media is just not an option for me, but I can quite understand why some people do.
