It is time for the quarter finals of the 2011 rugby world cup, and in terms of the matches scheduled, the situation looks explosive. Let’s start with the most obvious, this Springboks who must play against Australia. The expectations are very high in South Africa. Ever so often, I hear people being positive and saying that the Boks will win. I have very strong doubts. Australia is a very good side. This one could go either way, and it worries me that some senior players in the Bok side have not yet proven themselves convincingly against stronger sides this year. The pressure will be firmly on the shoulders of the Boks, and I hope they win, but it would not really surprise me if they don’t.
But being a Bok supporter, that is not nice to think about, so let’s move on. In my mind, I believe we will see a final between New Zeeland and Ireland. Doesn’t Ireland look amazingly strong? But the Irish have to play Wales, and Wales also looked so amazingly good against the Boks! The Ireland/Wales game, I suspect, is going to be one hell of a fight, can’t wait. It is highly unlikely the Argentina will beat the All Blacks. But between England and France I suppose one has to go with England, based on recent performances. The French can be unpredictable however.
The 2011 Rugby World cup could be one where a ’new’ side win it. Ireland, Wales and France have never won a world cup. However, one cannot see anyone stopping the All Blacks. But one never does. And then it happens anyway...
