Some women (and men) have been cursed by creativity. It is a force that sweeps them away on the wild passionate current of life. It is relentless in its intensity and smashes them against the ragged edges of rocks hidden by the often deceptively beautiful white foaming water of snaking rivers.
Creative people see potential in the world around them… objects that could be transformed into magnificent artworks in different media: perhaps an oil painting or a sepia photograph that captures the shadow and light that enhances beauty in a way that an ordinary eye will never see. Perhaps the artist will mould and shape a piece of clay to bring to life something that seems so “ordinary” to the untrained eye. A poet could build a verse of poetry around one word… A composer could take eight notes and give them wings to transport those who listen to a different universe.
The curse of creativity lies in the eye of the artist. Not the “rose-tinted glasses” that new love brings…no! It is that innate drive to find beauty in an otherwise pastel-coloured world. I suppose it’s not so painful when the focus of attention is an inanimate object. The problem lies when the focal point becomes people. This is where the pain and suffering is born. The force of creativity is so compelling…it is a dynamo that starts a fire deep within that cannot by doused without losing a part of your soul. It drives you towards destruction. It is a wild stallion running towards a cliff at breakneck speed. It is a shooting star that burns out in the sky…
Can a true artist create without suffering the agony of loss and pain? Irving Stone wrote a book about Michelangelo called “The Agony and the Ecstasy”. Is it true that only through experiencing intense passion and the resulting intense loss that art is born?
How does one protect your heart from pain? Should you change your view on life and stop seeing the potential that people have to grow and bloom in the splendorous beauty that you see deep inside them? Can you remove this curse from your soul and live a “Truman Show” life?
I’m reminded of two movies that mock the way people turn others into creations of their own making. The one movie is called “Being There”, based on the book by Jerzy Kozinsky. This is a brilliant book that was made into a fantastic movie about an imbecile gardener who eventually becomes the new USA presidential candidate. The second movie is the very well known “Forest Gump”. Forest personifies the creativity curse…he becomes the product of what everyone else wants him to be…football star…war hero…financial mogul…guru to thousands…when in reality he is a boy with a below average intelligence who just loves his girl Jenny.
I’m left with one question I have to ask myself: quo vadis?
Je ne sais pas…
