Reports in South Africa are circulating that the act that controls the possession of firearms is failing. This is based on the fact that despite the many firearms that have been taken out of circulation, the amount of crimes involving firearms has risen. When that piece of legislation was passed, government was warned that it will amount to nothing. In fact, what has effectively happened is that most of the law abiding citizens of South Africa now cannot defend themselves anymore. This is absolute insanity and clearly has failed all of South Africa’s citizens. The Black Gun Owners Association rightly comments that it does “not believe that government has any right to restrict the owning of firearms to any law abiding sane adult until government can show with recognised valid evidence that gun control will have any impact on crime.”
But this seems to be a trend in South Africa. The very same thing happened with the ESKOM debacle. Despite countless warnings by some very right minded people that South Africa is going to have massive infrastructure problems in the future, no notice was taken. Decisions are made ideologically in South Africa. They are not made rationally, and definitely not democratically, despite the country carrying the title of democracy. Given the country’s bitter struggle for democracy, these things are all the more fascinating.
