Rumours has it that South African cricketer Graeme Smith will announce his stepping down as captain of the test side. Most fans will welcome this development. Mr. Smith has, ever since he became captain of the side, been very critical of criticism. When it was said he is too young to be captain he didn’t like it. He often came across as being arrogant. The last straw for many Protea fans was when Smith decided against returning back to South Africa to face the fire after his team’s pathetic performance against underdogs New Zealand during the Cricket world cup, opting instead to visit Ireland with his fiancé. For many fans it would come as a relieve, instead of a disappointment to see Smith go as captain. Yet, he could still be around for a long time to come, since he will probably keep on playing for the Proteas. Let’s not forget that, despite his poor performances, Smith has made a lot of runs in his career, the man can certainly play cricket. Question is, what will his influence be in the national side after stepping down as captain (if he is still selected, one should add)?
On a more positive note, the national football side, Bafana Bafana, is seemingly on the way up, moving all the way into the top 40 on the FIFA world rankings. Hopefully their new found glory will last a bit. Also, it’s wonderful to see South African sides performing so well in the SUPER 15 rugby competition. Only, what to do with captain John Smit? Has the end of the road also come along for the rugby captain as it seems to have come for the cricket guy of what is going to happen? It boasts well for tha world cup later this year though, let’s hope the Sharks, Stormers and yes, even the Bulls can keep up with the rest.
