There is great uncertainty about the South African rugby side, the Springboks, and their world cup campaign of 2011. We have already seen what has happened to the cricket side. It seems as if a number of players were chosen for the world cup in India based on their reputation instead of their current form. Does Springbok coach Peter de Villiers have ‘favourites’? Are some people chosen because he likes them and trust them, instead of on the basis of their recent form?
What complicates the matter more is the fact that rugby is much more of a team sport as supposed to cricket, which is more individualistic. Combinations are important in rugby. And then there is the politics. It is always there. No amount comfort talk by any politician or administrator can hide from the public the fact that there is pressure on the Boks because the team is ‘too white’. Although South Africa is a democracy and the best team should be chosen, race always plays a part in these things.
Many of the members that were chosen for the group of 51, looks out of form and should not have made that group. This is a worrying development. It seems as if though some people are protected and as if professional sport in South Africa has been all about being in part of the old boys club in recent times.
