Ah rugby rugby rugby, what a great sport. Love it. Love to see men hurting each other in a legitimate way.
When the Bulls played the Crusaders in the Super 15 this weekend, it was said that this match will be a foreplay of what will happen between the Springboks and the All Blacks later this year. Of course the Crusaders smashed the Bulls, and one has reason to believe that this is what is going to happen later this year as well. The All Blacks will destroy the Springboks.
Well, I hope not, but the chances are good that Bok coach Peter de Villiers is going to choose the majority of the Bulls team for the Springboks. All the same old faces will be there. John Smith will be captain and loose head prop, because he cannot make the team as hooker anymore. De Villiers thus prefer to choose the captain FIRST and then the team, not the other way around as any normal coach would do.
It is a good thing that I do not follow rugby as closely as I used to. Watched a match the other day, the Cheetahs, oh my goodness, had me furious after just a few minutes. They cannot seem to tackle the opposition and I don’t think they should play Super rugby.
Well, hopefully coach Peter de Villiers will pick the best players for the Springboks and not some bunch of players on the basis of their reputations. Those old players are not fit anymore for international rugby. Younger ones must be given a chance. The Bulls play predictable rugby. There seem to be little hunger and many players rely strongly on their reputations. Hopefully they will regain their hunger, and if not, let’s hope de Villiers drops a lot of them. We have seen what happened with the cricket side when players are picked on reputation instead of form. It is unlikely that de Villiers will bring in a lot of new blood though. He has proven himself to be very loyal to John Smith and many other senior players.
