How easy is it to help poor people? Well, many people like to simply throw food and clothing at them. This makes them feel less guilty for being privileged. But is this really the answer to the problem?
It has been reported in the media here how rich communities has send such an abundance of food and clothing to poor suburbs, that the poor people has gone and sell these items. And what you think poor people do with money? Well, you can guess can’t you now!
It just goes to show that it is useless to help the poor in this way. There is, in fact, very little you can do for poor people. If they are ambitious, rich people can provide them work and skills in some way, and that can propel their lives in a better direction. But it has been shown, time and again, that some people are simply too lazy to do anything for themselves. And if you throw food at them, they sometimes end up doing nothing and even stop looking for work.
Professional people, well, theý can sometimes make a difference. Like qualified Social Workers. Rather give thém your money and your resources! They are better qualified than you are to redistribute these in the most effective and meaningful way possible. But simply by giving food to the poor is just plain silly and a waste of time.
What is the best one can do for the world? Live life to the fullest! When you engage with poor people, treat them with respect and dignity and no different than you would treat anybody else. People learn from each other, and you cannot force somebody to spend less money on alcohol. But just maybe, by setting the right example and showing the way, you can inspire others to follow you.
