Sinister, junctioned alleys
dark shadows crossing sparsely lit corridors
mysterious looking people in silent motion
Speckles of dust rising over sandal covered feet
soft whispers
occasionally a hearty laugh
Scantily clad dancers,
pulsating energy
to the rhythm of eastern music
Steaming hot baths
red lit cubicles
where skilled hands
manipulate and caress
oiled bodies
Incense and sweet fragrances
mingle with the odours
of stale perspiration
and spicy food
Dust and wind
sweeping gently across the market square
tents flaps flay apart
to reveal
crouched, stooped figures
of users and dealers
as they bargain and quarrel
over exchanges and sales
An ominous, almost evil mood
dominates the camp
travellers and buyers
go hurriedly about their business
Razor blades and needles
shine brightly in the dusky lamp light
as they prepare their goods
white powders lie in waiting ----
like virgin brides
untouched
pure
home made tourniquets’ curl like motionless snakes
murky mixtures of water and acids
bubble over burners.
Hollow-eyed they live their adventures
shifting restlessly now
as they feel the wane of their dreams
Shaking, fumbling hands
create new monsters
once again into their own oblivion
The shuffling of the old whores
mingle with the lighter steps of the dancers
swaying in unison
silhouettes against the dark, orange-coloured moon
Tired journeymen and families
return after a day of work
The trails of the caravan
once etched into the golden sand
are now erased by the whirlwind
spreading it’s arms across the desert
as if to isolate and capture the mood
