South Africa is often portrayed as one of the most polarised societies in the world. The media like to show clips of AWB leaders riding on their horses. There is often talks of racism, and events like the Caster Semenya saga, the Reitz video, the Skierlik shootings, the murder of AWB leader Eugene Terreblance and recently the whole ABSA transformation in rugby crisis often makes the headlines. But my experience of these things is completely different to that of what the media makes it to be. Of course leaders like to make race an issue. But let us not forget that South Africa’s whites, regardless of what you might think of them, are a people who gave up their political power for the sake of a better future for all. That is not rhetoric, that is making a change of heart. They could have clung to their power for much longer still, but they did not.
In my experience ordinary South Africans are reaching out to one another. Yes, there is exceptions, but the bulk of South Africans are friendly, forgiving, good-willed and can be very passionate. I experience reconciliation every day, why can so many leaders no experience this reconciliation? Is it maybe because in order for them to remain in power, they need South Africans to be divided?
