Fire! One does not realize the devastation of fire on a farm until you experience it yourself. It is something that everybody is weary of. And so it happened on Four Flies. Someone carelessly dropped a cigarette butt in the dry field. Driven by the wind it quickly spread, leaving only ashes behind.
This reminded me how insensitive we often are towards other people. Not only do we not respect their possessions, but we do not value them as people. We all acknowledge that lives are cheap these days, and that murder, rape and robbery are common daily occurrences. However, we do not always recognize the devastating fires we often start in the lives of others through our words and actions. Our indifference often leaves them behind with only the ashes of their lives and no hope for the future.
But, soon it will be spring and I cannot wait to see the soft green of new growth in the dead, black field. The destruction of fire is always followed by new life, and like nature, man is always inclined to heal. Therefore, let us not stay stuck in the ashes and blackness in and around us, but rather allow ourselves to see abundant new life.
