I don’t usually want to admit that people sometimes irritate me endlessly. Well, let’s face it, we simply don’t always like or get along with everyone around us. I’ve recently watched a few of Casper de Vries’s video clips on YOUTUBE and, of course, he doesn’t mince his words when it comes to expressing his views on some people. Expressing your feelings with more subtlety is to be recommended, especially when the object of your derision won’t actually understand the somewhat ambiguous or oxymoronic comment.
I have to share a funny incident. One of my friends’ husband was asked directions to a mall in Abu Dhabi last week. Fed up, and not in a mood for tourists, he replied, heavily accented, “Speak no English…”.(He is Afrikaans by the way). The young man who had enquired about the whereabouts of Marina Mall, turned to his friend and said (pardon the language)…”Ag jong, hierdie d@%&s praat nie Engels nie”. Ja-nee swaer. You have to be careful and always think before you open your mouth.
To get back to the artful insults, I’ve listed a few that I’ve come across in literature:
Deep down, he’s shallow.
He’s the kind of guy who can brighten a room by leaving it.
He has not a single redeeming defect.
He has impeccable bad taste.
The perfection of rottenness.
He has delusions of adequacy
When he’s alone in a room, there’s nobody there.
A genius with the IQ of a moron.
He’s the kind of man a woman would have to marry to get rid of.
The great thing about him was that you knew precisely where you were with him - because he always let you down.
I guess, at the end of the day, it is better to just keep quiet. Sometimes silence is the best form of communication. I’d rather say nothing than give false compliments, or utter words that I will regret. Anger and the thirst for revenge are destructive emotions. So, I guess I will end this by quoting Ashley Montagu:
“Revenge leads to an emptly fullness, like eating dirt”
and the wise words of Thomas Carlyle:
