A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song. A bird cannot consciously choose to sing or not to sing - it has to sing. Without its song, it would be a lesser bird with only feathers and wings
Maya Angelou
Just as birds have to sing, people have to be true to themselves. An artist who doesn’t express him or herself becomes a prisoner … caught within the confines of his or her own life. If you don’t write when you have the gift to bring not only joy to yourself but to all those people who are privileged enough to read your words, the energy that you have to give to the universe stays boxed up inside you. This energy becomes a destructive force, since it builds up inside you and magnifies until it causes some sort of pain…to yourself…your sense of vitality and life…or to those around you.
We all have creative energy inside us, but some people have it in abundance. Some very creative people have just not learnt to find the right outlet for this incredible, unharnassed power inside them. Tony Buzan, in his book “The Power of Creative Intelligence” asks the question: “Are you alive?” Yes, a strange question that seems so obsolete since you are actually here, reading it! But the point that he makes is that the very fact that you are alive is testimony to your creativity since your brain has to find thousands of creative solutions to problems that help you stay alive!
What is true genius then? Do we all have an untapped source inside us that could make us a genius in one field or the other? It is a misconception that geniuses only have a few good ideas and eventually run out of steam. As a matter of fact, a creative genius has a huge flow of ideas that generate more ideas that eventually accelerate the production of more ideas. Not all ideas are “brilliant”. Not everything works well or are best sellers, but it is from these attempts that true brilliance emerge.
Here is a brief list of true creative geniuses:
* Marie Curie (won TWO Nobel Prizes in physics and chemistry!)
* Leonardo da Vinci (obvious!!!!!)
* Thomas Edison (registered 1093 original patents)
* Garry Kasparov (analyzed thougsands of the world’s great chess games) and the greatest chess player in history
* Mozart (more than 600 pieces of music, 40 symphonies)
* Pablo Picasso (20 000 artistic works)
* William Shakespeare (154 sonnets, 37 plays)
* Rembrandt (650 paintings, 2000 drawings)
Of course there are many modern day geniuses out there. And many undiscovered ones…one of them could be you!
So, go out there and discover your talent. Sing your song to the world. Be the bird that you can be…have to be. I’m sure you all know the story of the eagle that grew up in a farmyard with chickens. He behaved like a chicken - jumped around and pecked at worms and bird feed given to them by the farmer. He didn’t know that he could fly…because he never even opened his wings. Just imagine his joy when he discovered the freedom that soaring high above the earth could bring. How will you know that you can draw, or paint or write or dance or design if you never try?
I hope to hear your beautiful song one day…
