“The Ambassador” is one of the older novels of the well-known South African novelist Andre Brink. Brink has written many novels since writing this one, and one has to keep in mind the context of the time it was written while reading this one. “The Ambassador”, I have to sadly admit, is not one of my favourite Brink novels. Compared to some of his other novels, I did not really enjoy this one, but there were some refreshing aspects to ‘The Ambassador”.
Like most of Brink’s novels, the fragile nature of relationships between people comes very much to the fore in “The Ambassador”. I have never read any one of his novels that is not set in Southern Africa, and in this respect, “The Ambassador” is very different since the story takes place in Paris, France. This setting provides a very interesting feel to the book.
I expected politics to feature much more prominent than it did in “the Ambassador”, and I cannot puzzle out weather the fact that it didn’t was a blessing or a curse. The overall truth is that although a big part of the book was very enjoyable to read, the book failed to grab and hold my concentration. In the end, it was a struggle all the way to the end – this despite the fact that at first the book looked very promising to me.
Still, for being interested in his work, it is perhaps very important to read this one. It is important for the purpose of comparison with his other work, as well as to form an opinion, and my opinion is that Brink has written much better books than this one.
