We all wake up one day with the question: “Where do I fit into the grand scheme of life?”
It is natural. It is reflective. There are billions of people on earth, each with his or her own sets of problems and feelings, wants…needs. We all want to belong somewhere. We search for meaning -we need self-actualisation.
This question about life and its masterplan is more often asked by people who have tipped the scales towards the second half of their lives. The realisation has to come: life is not permanent. We are on a journey that has to end. Suddenly Monty Python's “Meaning of Life” takes on another dimension.…It is at this point (old age) that some people become resentful and filled with bitterness. Yet, others use their experience and reflection to make the second half of their lives the best half.
Have you asked yourself that dreaded question? Is it ever possible to answer it? At this point I feel the words of Noel Coward are well worth remembering:
My importance to the world is relatively small. On the other hand, my importance to myself is tremendous. I am all I have to work with, to play with, to suffer and to enjoy. It is not the eyes of others I’m wary of, but my own. I do not intend to let myself down more that I can possibly help, and I find that the fewer illusions I have about myself or the world around me, the better company I am for myself.
This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t dream and have aspirations.
I think it was Julien Lennon who said:
“Dreaming is your soul singing”
