Bavarian Fleckvieh Genetics (BFG) is shocked about the announcement of Parmalat, one of the biggest milk processors in Southern Africa, to reduce the farm gate milk price with 30 cents a litre at a time when internationally milk prices are slowly picking up. For the drought stressed dairy farmers in the Southern and Eastern Cape this notification is a stab in the back and will result in more bankruptcies in the dairy community and will weaken the South African efforts for food security.
After a terrible year the global dairy industry expects higher milk prices according to higher consumption beginning of 2010 and smaller stocks of butter and powdered milk. The outlook for the beef price is also very positive.
According to our experience in the previous years we encourage dairy farmers to pool their interests against the increasing influence of multinational food companies which already act as oligopolies and monopolies respectively. Therefore it is of vital interest that all dairy farmers, all industries benefiting from dairy farmers, dairy consultants, consumers and politicians stand together and raise their voice for a sustainable and profitable SA milk production. There is also a strong need for dairy farmers not only to think about the production of milk but also to focus on marketing and a highly effective management of supply and demand.

The fact that SA is a nett importer beef should encourage dairy farmers to reconsider their strategies.
