There was a time when...
A little stuffed rabbit felt lonely and insecure.
A wise old horse knew that love could make a toy real.
A cozy spot in bed was enough to warm the heart.
A good book could make the world a better place.
You knew who you really were and what you really valued.
A simple truth could change everything.
From The Velveteen Rabbit by: Margery Williams
Most of us know the story of the Velveteen Rabbit and about what it means to be ‘real’. For those who don’t it goes something like this: The Velveteen Rabbit asked the Skin Horse what was meant by 'real' and whether becoming ‘real’ hurt. The Skin Horse replied,
“When you are real you don’t mind being hurt. Generally by the time you are real most of your hair has been loved off and your eyes drop out and you get loose joints and become very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all because when you are real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”
Today I received a photo of my mother by email; she was attending a wedding and looked very elegant. What struck me though was that although she is really getting old, to me she is beautiful and ‘real’. She symbolizes life; my mother is my “Velveteen Rabbit”.
Life is full of bumps and every bump is a lesson learned and every lesson makes us more and more ‘real’. Living hurts, of course it does! Who of us can really say that we have never been hurt in our lives? I believe that in the end the hurting is worth it because we are loved.
Becoming real is a process that is filled with many obstacles and emotions. Becoming real requires the courage to overcome the painful things that are thrown our way it requires honesty, generosity and above all else it requires love.
