Do you know what a horrible feeling it is to arrive at the spot where you parked your car just to find that it has been stolen? Of course you do, you’re South African, aren’t you?
A couple of days ago I experienced this horrid, empty and panicky feeling when my car was stolen. I know that I should be grateful that the car was stolen and that we were not car-jacked, and I am. But I still think that it’s a bunch of bullshit that we should be living in a country that puts us in such a position. Why should we be glad not to be car-jacked or killed? We shouldn’t have to live in such conditions, should we?
“Oh gosh, I’m such a lucky South African because I wasn’t car-jacked, my car was only stolen!”
Crap! Criminals and thieves rule this country and they make us hide in our safe (or so we think) little houses. When we do have to go out we carry pepper spray or stun guns around for protection and we leave all our jewelry safely locked away somewhere. What a waste!
Criminals have absolutely no respect for other people’s property and even less respect for life!
Talking about respect maybe it’s just me but have you noticed how our society is in decline?
When I was young words like “please” and “thank you” were drummed into us. We were taught to respect our elders and also to respect other people’s property and to apologise. If you didn’t give your seat to an older person you were sure to receive a knock against the head.
Good manners are not that difficult to grasp. It’s about being polite, tolerant and respectful to those around you. People don’t apologise anymore they retaliate by saying things like, “talk to the hand!” or by sticking out the middle finger and shouting, “sit on it and swivel!”
Well I’m gatvol! I’m sick of the drunken lay-abouts that whoop it up outside my front gate every weekend and nothing is ever done to stop them! I’m fed up with the rude drivers that hoot and shout abuse at each other in the new traffic circle outside my house.
The other day I was driving in my then unstolen car and I stopped at the stop sign. The woman driving behind me began hooting and throwing signs at me for stopping. Well I couldn’t believe it, but that was nothing compared to the abuse she threw at me when after that I deliberately stopped at a yield sign!
I mean, it’s getting to the stage that we as a society are becoming just as rude and inconsiderate as the thieves and criminals that we complain about.
Here is my toast to this country of ours where crime, violence and promiscuity are a normal way of life:
“Cheers to our Fears,
Applause to our Cause (or lack thereof),
And now that Suck with an “F” is a household word,
May all our Orgasms be multiple!”
(At least we’ll have something to look forward to)
