Drakensville is nestled at the foothills of the majestic Amphitheatre with a panoramic view of the Northern Drakensberg range. It is also far from the maddening crowds but will soon to be infiltrated by a crowd of mad bikers. Us!
Missing the 2007 Ulysses National Rally was the pits! Last year looking after my ailing MIL kept me at home in my shell and we missed the ninth Ulysses National Rally at Colesburg (the only one we have ever missed). Grootbaas Klein Eiland told me that it was not the same there without me because he had to “pay” for entertainment. Whether I should take that as an insult or a compliment I’m still not too sure.
Excitement is gradually building up here at home because in only seventeen sleeps I shall be at the tenth national rally, my carapace under my one arm and my helmet under the other! If it’s entertainment they want then it’s entertainment I shall provide. There will be no pulling my head into my wimple this year! I’m already making a list of what to pack and how to get it all to fit in the bike’s panniers and top box. Make-up (for sure!) long-john’s (definitely!) pullovers, scarves, socks and beanies. Alcohol – nope that can be purchased there. Food – nope we’ll be enjoying rally fare (yuck!) Okay, so that’s it then make-up and warm clothes. Ooh… I almost forgot, double ply toilet paper – a must!
I must admit that I am rather apprehensive because this is my first long ride in almost two years. After riding only one hundred kilometres my butt aches, my legs cramp and my helmet weighs at least thirty kilos, but I know I can do it. After all I’m only riding pillion. I do not ride my own bike, I prefer to ride on the back with Hubby in control. This way I can have many happy kilometres of snuggling up behind him. We don’t have one of those intercom things so we can’t communicate while riding. I’m sure that to Hubby one of the greatest joys of the road is spending time with me and not having to listen to me talking all the time.
