The other day while two of my granddaughters were visiting, Monica looked up at me and asked: “Gommie, how does it feel to be old?” I must admit that the question came as a bit of a shock because you see, I don’t think of myself as old… yet.
Well, a sincere question deserves an honest answer so this is what I told her:
“Although I don’t feel really old I suppose that to you, a ten year old I seem ancient. Being old is actually great fun because at last I am the person that I’ve always wanted to be. I don’t mean that wrinkles and aching joints are fun what I am talking about is what’s inside me and around me. I have an amazingly great man in my life, wonderful children and grandchildren that bring joy, laughter and tears. I am fortunate enough to have a mother that is still with me and a large family of crazy people to visit with. When I need to run away from family, I have marvelous friends that I can be with.
Being older means that I don’t need to obtain anyone’s permission or approval to do the things I like doing. I’m allowed to be eccentric and extravagant, I can eat too much and occasionally drink too much and nobody blinks an eye. I play with slot cars and ride on back of your grandpa’s bike whenever I feel like it. I can dance and sing at the top of my voice to the great songs of the 60’s and 70’s. I can walk on the beach with shorts on and not be shy; I can even pull them off and dive into the waves if I want to.
One day when I’m much older than what I am now I will get to hit people with my cane if they bug me, I’ll even have a set of teeth for every occasion and I’ll be able to brush them and sing at the same time.
You see I am fortunate enough to have the wisdom that comes with age but still feel young enough to enjoy my life. I like being older and above all I like the person I am, it feels kind of groovy.”
To which both little granddaughters replied, “Oh, I can’t wait to get old.”
