“ Blessed are those who allow themselves
The time they need to learn,
To reflect and to grow.”
Although Gamkaskloof is only fifty-seven kilometres from Prince Albert on the Swartberg Pass, it is a drive that takes about three hours. From the Gamkaskloof turnoff the road snakes before you for thirty-seven kilometres and the different varieties of Proteas and Fynbos are a sight to behold!
Along the road we stopped to look at small waterfalls next to the road and also to eat – on holiday I am permanently hungry so I complain a lot if I don’t get food. Hubby stops often to keep the woman happy! What’s the rush, we’re on vacation?
Driving the Leb (Hubby’s Ranchero) on the road to The Hell was okay until the last four kilometres. This was when the road became steep with sharp bends and it seemed that we were going to crash into the mountainsides or fall off the cliff at every twist and turn of the road that crawls up the narrow slopes.
On the way to The Hell you learn to pray… when an oncoming car edges towards you, you pray that God be with you. When you are climbing upward along the hairpin twists of road and look at the sheer drop below you, you pray that God be with you! When your car lifts up and you see nothing but sky ahead of you and as suddenly as the car drops the road bends to the left, you pray that God be with you. When your vehicle begins its descent down to the portals of The Hell, you pray that God be with you. But, when you have reached the gates of The Hell you KNOW that God has always been there with you because you have entered the Garden of Eden!
A visit to this beautiful place is a soul experience. An Eden where you can sit and listen to the birds singing, experience nature and serenity. No traffic, no noise, just timelessness and isolation. The Hell is truly a Paradise!
