Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes I am back feeling rejuvenated and revitalized!
Prince Albert, no not a man’s watch chain or a kind of Genital piercing, I’m talking about Prince Albert the historic little village at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains.
A place with trees that have been carved to look like human beings, Gum trees that smell like eucalyptus and spectacular night skies. A town that has beautifully preserved historic buildings ranging from Cape Dutch, Karoo and Victorian styles.
A place where one can find clear water flowing from springs in the mountains or simply stroll around the town and listen to the water gurgling down the furrows. Being in Prince Albert is like entering a different era; the townsfolk have siestas at lunchtime for goodness sake! What are we supposed to do when they are asleep? Don’t they know we are rat-racers?
Has anyone ever heard of an airport without a runway or even a windsock? Well Prince Albert has one, and I am not fibbing. There is only a hangar without a door and no electricity. I know this for a fact because we were invited there to listen to one of the local musicians (Hubby knew him from the seventy’s) who I shall refer to as The Finch, playing an acoustic guitar and crooning heart-breaking lyrics to us in the hangar. It was very romantic in fact!
I can with all sincerity say that Prince Albert may not have an airport or even planes to boast about but it definitely has a Nightingale it can be proud of!
Hubby being the person he is was quick to make friends with the locals (mostly farmers from the area) and after listening to the Finch’s good singing we all met at the Bush Pub, the only joint that is open after eight at night.
Mountain air tends to make normal people like me very sleepy so I left Hubby and his new buddies and went to our temporary abode to catch up on my beauty sleep. Now let me explain something about Prince Albert, they allow no drinking or loitering in the streets, except that is for Hubby who came staggering back to our B&B at three o’clock in the morning! As one lady I met (I’m sure she was a bit high) told me, “Here in PA we are kind to our tourist friends.”
I guess that’s why Hubby got away with his early morning two-step waltz home. (Step… one… two… step!)
The changing colours of the Swartberg Mountains that surround the town, Karoo sunshine, fresh mountain winds and brilliant starry skies. Olive Groves and a cheese factory with the most delicious cheeses, Prince Albert is unquestionably a place where the soul is restored!
