Today is a special day because it is my mother’s 79th birthday.
She is such a wonderful person this mother of mine and I admire her because she is the person that she is.
She’s a fighter and a survivor. I have seen many difficulties and heartache thrown her way, yet she accepted them and dealt with them only as strong a person as herself could have done. Her little body has been battered and beaten by two huge heart bypass operations and her little hands are gnarled with arthritis but she still works in her garden and drives her own car.
My mother had six children. She raised us to be well bred, well read and kind. She drummed good manners into all her kids and through financially difficult periods she would say: “We might be struggling, but we are a proud family!”
My mother taught me to knit when I was a child and then as an adult (when I was so ill and almost died) she taught me how to crochet in French! Now I can’t read a pattern in English let alone Afrikaans!
She has been there for me my whole life and I love her for it. She is my rock! Today my mom and I are best friends although it was not always the case. Let me explain. My mother was always there for me but as a child there were boundaries and rules. Now I’m an adult and my mother’s “mothering” job is over so we can both just laugh and joke and cry together like two adult women.
I am so grateful for having her in my life and I never want to take her for granted, because if I hadn’t had her as a mother, my life would have been meaningless!
Mami,
If I could give you diamonds
For each tear you cried for me.
If I could five you sapphires
For each truth you’ve helped me see.
If I could give you rubies
For the heartache that you’ve known
If I could give you pearls
For the wisdom that you’ve shown
Then you’ll have a treasure, mother,
That would mount up to the skies
That would almost match
The sparkle in your loving eyes.
But I have no pearls, no diamonds,
As I’m sure you’re well aware
So Ill give you a gift more precious
My devotion and my love and care.
