Have you ever heard the saying, 'if it has testicles or tyres you can be sure you’re going to have trouble with it?' Well this saying more than likely refers to real cars because even though I sometimes have trouble with the “testes” part (not that I have any mind you, I am referring to the male aspect), my 1/32 scale red Ferrari never lets me down; let me tell you why.
On Thursday night Hubby took me to watch Slot Car racing at a club in Pretoria. I stood in awe of what looked to me like the biggest track I had ever seen and my heart soared as I watched those small models racing around it.
Once the race was over I was allowed to take my car around the track a bit. I looked down at my car and mumbled 'It’s you and me against these guys baby.'
I nervously plugged my controller into the power supply behind me, red lane for the red car, very appropriate. I looked across at Hubby who gave me a thumbs-up and his warm smile of encouragement I smiled back and then turned my full attention to my Ferrari as my finger hit the trigger and off I went!
My first lap started off gingerly as I acquainted myself with the track, on the second lap I became a little more 'Windgat’ and as I revved my motor everybody looked up in complete surprise at the excellent performance of this beautiful car. My Ferrari was a low-flying red machine speeding down the track as if it’s wheels weren’t even touching the track. I got better and better with every lap. I was flying down the straight, braking and then accelerating through the turns and speeding on under the bridge where the lap counter pick-up was located. It clocked my best lap at 6.1 seconds on a 40m track. Not bad for a novice!
I rode feeling the adrenaline rush and I thought that this must be exactly how Ludvico Scarfiotti must have felt at the 1967 twenty-four hour Le Mans – A true Champion! I am sure that if Enzo Ferrari were alive today he would also hang a photo of my Ferrari and me on his wall as he has done with all his previous champions.
I left feeling elated and even the envious scowls of certain male racers could not dampen my spirit, all I have to say to them is, 'Be afraid, be very afraid!'
So that’s it I’m hooked and would definitely like to join a slot car club so keep an eye out for me on your Channel of champions!
