Slot car racing is not at all like playing computer games or collecting stamps, this sport is flat out fun! The only other hobby that could come close to slot car racing is perhaps radio-controlled vehicles and planes. You can’t race model trains, Barbie dolls don’t fight with Brats. When it comes to rockets it’s one WHOOSH and you look up at the sky in the hope that you’ll see where it went. A kite is a kite and a picture puzzle is a picture puzzle.
Slot car racing on the other hand provides endless high-speed action. Whether I’m on the track practicing by myself or racing against Hubby and friends, the adrenaline-pumping action is non-stop! I don’t merely sit down and pull the trigger on my control, I stand, sometimes bouncing and often running around the track – especially when I hit that corner too fast and my car flies off during a race.
Try to ignore the fact that these cars are 1/32nd scale and drown yourself in the exciting world of miniature motor racing. These little cars race around the track at such high speeds that they sometimes finish a lap of 15 meters in 2.6 seconds, it’s absolutely amazing!
The idea of course is to drive as fast as you can without de-slotting. Concentration and the skill to maneuver your car are necessary. This hobby is challenging, stimulating and very competitive. So competitive in fact that certain people will do anything to beat me such as extra magnets and stronger motors. Hubby is so chicken to race me that his magnets actually defy the law of gravity! That car sits on that track like poop to a wool blanket. If his car de-slots and I put it back on the track the sheer force of the magnets pull me down to that track so fast that I almost hit my head on it, and this is not a word of a lie. Okay, perhaps I’m exaggerating a teeny bit! But even he will admit that I’ve become much better at it and beating me has become a bigger challenge for him.
Part of the fun is to know your car and be able to work on it yourself. I have steadily learned to do this (thanks to the training received from Hubby) so now I do my own car maintenance and cleaning. I check the brushes and the tyres, oil the gears and the motor as well as clean the car and remove all grime and fluff. A clean car is a performing car!
When I put that car on the track and it shines it’s so clean I feel such a great sense of pride in my workmanship or should I say workwomanship that I feel like a winner before I even race.
It’s the most fun I’ve ever had while I’ve still kept my clothes on.
