Have you ever heard the expression ‘shake your family tree and watch the nuts fall out’, well that literally paints a picture of my roots; forgive the pun.
Don't get me wrong, my mother’s six children, of which only five are alive, are a damn fine bunch of people, but each of us is unique and odd in a nice kind of way. For instance my sister can take up to three days to ‘catch’ a joke and then she phones me up to laugh about it! She is also one of the most amazing women I know and I love her. My brother is a character on his own, a nice mixture between wildness and kindness, and a man capable of such great joy and matching sorrow.
My mother is the most straightforward person you may come across, she’ll tell it like it is, but to soften the blow she has a lovely sense of humour and laughs easily. Although she will be seventy- nine years old this year she simply never seems to grow old, her face is the sunshine that lights my days and to me she is beautiful!
As for me, well I’m sure I could write a book about my idiosyncrasies, a soapbox opera.
To understand my family better there are five things you should know. One, we are not crazy. Two, some of us think that we’re the most important people on the planet. Therefore whatever they are doing or want to do at any given moment becomes the most important thing in the world. Three, we come from a long line of entertainers and pranksters, so if anyone of us is around you can be sure we’ll pull a trick or two from our sleeves. Four, we are spontaneous and passionate about everything, everyday. And last but not least we are impulsive. If impulsiveness were an Olympic sport my family would win the gold medal. That is if they even show up for the event and have not made other more important plans.
Despite the fact that we have all followed different paths our family remains a chain of strength and love. With every birth and every marriage the chain grows and the links get stronger. Every joy we share, every argument we have and every crisis we face merely serves to strengthen our bond as a family. I’m glad they’re mine!
