When MIL came became ill and came to stay with us it was inevitable that all our ‘fun’ recreational activities would take the back-seat, so when Hubby took his long forgotten and very dusty scale electric set out of the cupboard and set it up I thought to myself; “good, he’s keeping busy.” He would spend hours on his own adjusting the track and tuning his cars, on his own that is until he bought me my first slot car.
We love cars, old cars, fast cars, classic cars you name it we love it! Alas like most people we can’t afford to race the real thing, so thank goodness for Slot Cars!
I never thought that I’d hear myself say these words but Scale Electric racing is 100% addictive, exciting and competitive. Initially it was just a hobby but it soon becomes an obsession, and winning is essential! It’s about the excitement of playing and actually racing miniature electric-powered replicas of the full sized cars. All day you plan your strategy so that you will win that night. Should you accelerate or slow down around that tricky corner, which car should you use? Racing around that track is not merely a matter of going at it full speed, this is an exercise that benefits your hand-eye coordination and tests your reflexes. I wouldn’t call it slot car racing though, I think the words “aaah Sheeeet!” suit the hobby better. Our neighbours must think we fight a lot because every evening there are yells of “Hey, watch it!” or “Can’t you look where you’re going, P…pall?”
Slot cars today are so cool, the detail put into these models is incredible, and it’s not just about the car. You have to look at the tyres, gear ratios, etc. If they have a crash and break no problem, fine-tuning and modifying them is also part of the fun. The faster the better!
Not to forget about the track, track layout is very important otherwise the car will de-slot. Scenery is another must, trees, buildings, garages, and the lot! Where else did you expect the spectators to sit?
Mastering your control will eventually have a lot to do with whether you’re a good “driver” or not, more brakes or less brakes, more acceleration or not, those are all to do with the tricks of the trade.
Another added bonus is that you never have to wonder what to buy him/her as for a birthday or Christmas gift because there is always a better and faster car out there somewhere.
Got to love and leave you now, I’m off to the races!
