As a child I always looked forward to the Christmas holidays. Lots of time to just enjoy life and have fun. Christmas was even better with all the great food and cool stuff under the tree.
These memories are still imprinted in my mind and every year I look forward to Christmas, because it’s about people and not things!
I was quite shocked the other day when during a telephone conversation a friend of ours told Hubby that he wasn’t sure what to buy his partner because what if the gift was not expensive enough or big enough? How does one measure the worth of someone’s love through material things? I reckon it’s because materialistic people are insecure! They think that having a lot of expensive things will prove to the world that they are successful. They want possessions not for the happiness that they bring but rather as a status symbol.
Paul the Apostle wrote, “The love of money is root of all evil.” Someone else wrote, “The lack of money is the root of all evil.” Although this is meant as a joke it has a lot of truth in it. There are so many people wanting more material things that they get deeper and deeper into debt. Everyone wants to keep up with the Joneses and then it seems that there is never enough and we want more.
This will always be a problem to human beings because unfortunately we all have this urge to buy things and to own things. We should realize that sometimes less is more. Less materialism means more family togetherness. More toys and wastefulness means children with less real values.
Perhaps this year we should try doing or giving instead of receiving. It is in doing and not in receiving that we will find the true meaning of “Peace on Earth and Goodwill towards all men.”
We can give of our time and our love because it is by our actions as we bless other people that we ourselves are really blessed.
Maybe, just like Scrooge, we too can find the true meaning of Christmas.
Have a Blessed One!
